The Archival Oyster

The City of Apalachicola is at the mouth of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin, a watershed that extends from Lake Lanier through to Atlanta, the farmlands of Southern Georgia and into the Florida Panhandle. Within these small coastal spaces lies a diverse and complex history. The history of Black Apalachicola and the water is the focus of this project- from spaces of leisure to seafood - it is impossible to tell the story of Apalach without the stories of the diverse communities that have lived by the water’s edge. The project includes a zine with the information about the historic city and a fabric mural depicting a combination of archival images and contemporary photographs of Apalachicola’s lively landscape and community. The fabric was dyed with local plants and rusted objects all sourced from Apalachicola.
